“Top 5” reads of the year (with a little fudging on the numbers)
I am blown away when I look back at this year in books!! I read less than ½ the number of books I did in each of the past 2 years, BUT I found 4 books that have pushed their way onto my top 5 all time favorites list..and carved out their own little spots in my heart!! Fantastic, amazing, really freaking special books that are a level above everything else I have ever read! Books that got a 10/10!! What a GREAT year!! So here we go! These are the must read books of the year! The books I couldn’t put down, and couldn’t stop thinking about when I was done, and drove everyone crazy talking about them! The books that caused extremely late nights of reading, and lots of ugly crying, and laughter and sighing, and some serious author crushes! These are the books you HAVE to read!! Go. 1-click. Read.
Oh – one more thing before we get to the countdown – we all know that Thief by Tarryn Fisher is book 3 of my #1 series Of. All. Time! So I’m leaving it off the list (it’s really not fair to make anyone else compete with Tarryn Fisher for my affection anyway – she owns me!!) The writing is unparalleled, the characters perfectly, terribly flawed, the storyline so tightly woven…it’s just perfection. I cannot recommend it highly enough!!
6. (Yeah, I KNOW – it’s supposed to be a top 5, but the top 5 are sooooo solid, and these books deserve to be on the list too…so, shut up!!) Clockwork Princess – Cassandra Clare, Requiem – Lauren Oliver, Unravel Me – Tahereh Mafi, and (with a caveat because I’m not done with it yet) Allegiant – Veronica Roth
All of these books are YA, they are sequels to books that have made my “best of” lists in previous years, and they did NOT disappoint me!! Clockwork Angel is the standout – possibly my favorite of all the Cassandra Clare books so far – just fantastic!! Great action, characters that make me feel all the feels, and strong, surprising, believable storyline! It’s everything PLUS the #1 love triangle I have EVER read!!! Requiem and Allegiant both feel like a slight letdown from the first two books in their series, but still just fantastic! Requiem contains some of the most beautiful words I’ve ever read – Lauren Oliver’s writing destroys my heart!! Unravel Me succeeded in making me change my mind about a character…not a small task, and has great action, and steamy chemistry!

5. A Different Blue – Amy Harmon and In the Fields – Willow Aster
Both books that are written by authors with other books on this list! Both Authors that I adore, both books that I couldn’t put down, couldn’t stop thinking about, that touched me very deeply! Beautifully written, spectacularly intelligent, realistically emotionally devastating…just fantastic!!
4. Making Faces – Amy Harmon
Beautiful. I just don’t know what to say about this book – my review is the best I can do, and it is woefully unworthy! This is a must read that will tug on your heartstrings, and make you think, and quietly sneak up and claim your heart and mind! This subtle stunner is beautifully written, perfectly paced, and feels so real it is hard to read at times – but SO worth the pain!!! It needs to be on my top 5 all time favorites list…but I’m struggling with making room for it, because I am soooo attached to that list. #booknerdproblems
Read it. Now.
3. The Sea of Tranquility – Katja Millay
This book took me by surprise…mostly because I read it directly after Left Drowning, (which rocked my freaking world!!) and I just didn’t expect to find another AMAZING book right away!! The writing is so sharp – it sliced me open over and over. The timing of every reveal was perfect. The tiniest details thought out completely. The characters make me want to hold them and protect them from all the trauma in their lives. This book is everything. My review says it all…I don’t know what else to say! This book is so damn special. So is Katja Millay.
2. True Love Story – by Willow Aster
Willow Aster coming into my life is one of the best things that happened to me in 2013. She is a personal friend, and I love her to the moon and back. But I didn’t really know her when I agreed to be a beta reader for this book, and I promise you that the experience I had reading this book was in no way due to our friendship!! It’s all about the writing. This wasn’t just reading a book to me – it was LIVING a story, dying inside over the terrible heartbreak, soaring with the hope, joy, and LOVE…crashing with the crushing revelations…it was an entertainment event!!! The characters and the story grabbed my heart from the first paragraphs, and I was just hanging on for the ride (and loving every minute of it) for the rest of the book! Willow’s writing is just magic. Magic!! Trust me. You don’t want to miss this one!
1. Left Drowning – Jessica Park
Aaah – Left Drowning. Chris. Blythe. SABIN. This book was such an overwhelming experience for me – I really don’t know how to express it! This book is everything! EVERYTHING!!! I am fanatical about it, and about Jessica Park! She is a special talent, her writing is perfection, and I love her guts!!! You really need to read my review to understand how I feel about this book – but here’s what I said today on the blog (talking about it being on sale):
In case you’ve missed me raving like a psychotic fangirl about this book, here are the bullet points:
*Made me laugh out loud
*Made me UGLY cry (and text the author cussing her out…multiple times!)
*Superbly written and edited
*One of the SMARTEST “romance” novels I have ever read
*Hot, Hot, HOT sex
*#2 on my all time favorites list
