*This review is for the entire EIT series up to Come Alive*
If you know anything about me or follow my reviews at all you know that I am a HUGE Karina Halle fan. Everything she writes, I love – simple as that. That being said, I had been a complete slacker with the Experiment in Terror series. My love for Karina came about after a ton of these books were already released and I just felt like it was such a huge commitment to start this series when I was already10 books behind. With enough badgering by some of my best book friends I finally took the plunge and let me tell you I am SO, SO HAPPY that I did…
EIT is now one of my favorite series EVER. It grabbed me from the start and I instantly fell in love with the main characters, Dex and Perry. As I kept reading the books just got exponentially better and better…each time I thought I had read “my favorite book of the series” I was proved wrong with the next. My plan was to write a small review for each book but I couldn’t – when each one ended I NEEDED to continue on to the next, I just couldn’t get enough!
EIT has so many different elements that it is sort of difficult to explain to others what is so great about it. I mean yeah, okay, it is a story about paranormal happenings and it is a romance. But really, a paranormal romance doesn’t seem right. It is some of the creepiest paranormal and one of the most amazing and entertaining romance stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading all wrapped in to one. There were parts that were so far beyond creepy that I asked myself how Karina could possibly dream this stuff up. Her imagination is absolutely mind-blowing and I am constantly in awe of her. She included some absolutely heart-stopping game changers in this book and continuously kept me on my feet. I never knew which direction the story would be taking and to me, with so many books it is incredible that she can keep each one entertaining and unpredictable.
EIT’s main characters, Dex and Perry, are probably two of my favorite characters of all time. They aren’t the typical smoking hott millionaire or slim, sexy virgin…they are real and I LOVE them. I love how Perry is sassy and Dex is an asshole. I love that Perry is curvy and Dex has a creeper stache. But most of all I love that Dex and Perry are strong in their own ways yet they are both broken and vulnerable as well. Watching them evolve throughout the story is truly one of the best reading journeys I have ever been on and I can see myself rereading these stories time and time again to get my fix of this one-of-a-kind duo.
I had been told time and time again that this story was one of the most epic romance stories of all time. At first I didn’t get it – how could it possibly be considered an epic romance? But as time went on I got it, boy did I ever. I had heard the term “slow burn” used by people to describe Dex and Perry’s relationship and once it all became clear that’s exactly the right term to describe it. These two ripped so many emotions out of my chest. I cried, I laughed out loud, I screeched with joy and I wanted to throw my kindle against the wall more than once. The sexual tension and angst that you can feel constantly running through these two is so, so intense. Seriously though…if you want the equation for some of the hottest sex scenes ever, check out Dex and Perry…wowza…
Besides Dex and Perry EIT is also filled with a bunch of other amazing characters. Whether I love them, hate them or love to hate them Karina writes these characters that I can’t help but love to read about. Each one brings something else to the table and the way that the characters are all intertwined is something I really enjoy. Karina even goes to the extent of intertwining her series. I won’t say too much in case you haven’t read it but I read and absolutely LOVED The Devil’s Metal and The Devil’s Reprise so it was a great little surprise when I saw tidbits of that story line intertwining with this one.
All in all, I give this series an absolute 5+ stars…I’d give it more if I could. Some of the beginning stories were only 4 or 4.5 stars for me but as the series went on I was just blown away and would have rated some of the books 10 stars if I could. I am so thankful that I finally decided to read these books and that I don’t have much of a wait until Ashes to Ashes is released. I’d recommend these books to anyone looking for something different and refreshing….I can’t imagine that anyone wouldn’t absolutely love it as much as I did! Thanks again Karina, for an absolutely extraordinary series! You continue to amaze me time and time again!
Karina Halle is the USA Today Best Selling Author of The Artists Trilogy (On Every Street, Sins & Needles, Shooting Scars, and Bold Tricks) published by Hachette, the Experiment in Terror series, and The Devil’s series published by Diversion.
The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).
Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse with her fiance and rescue pup.
