New Review by Maria – In the Fields, by Willow Aster

9/10

This book is Willow Aster’s 2nd novel. Her first (True Love Story) is on my top 5 favorites of all time list, so to say I had high expectations going into this read would be an understatement!! I was NOT disappointed!!

This is a sweeping Southern Gothic Romance that had me completely absorbed into its world from the very first pages! Willow Aster’s writing is soothing, amusing, and heart-wrenching in turns, and every emotion evoked is completely authentic!! I checked out of life to read this in one day, and I was brought to tears a total of SIX times in the course of that day!! But it wasn’t repetitive heartbreak – every instance was a different type of pain, a different person’s suffering, a chance to put yourself into a situation that most of us will (thankfully) never face, and feel…really feel the gut wrenching emotion of so many different types of loss. This is not a light, easy read. It is emotionally heavy. But it’s not dark and dreary either! There are many moments of levity, and southern charm which help lighten the heavy story, and there is grit, strength, determination, and love running throughout!

I am rarely caught off guard in books! I don’t get surprised often, and I almost never fall for characters who I didn’t see coming, but Willow managed to do both in this book, and I am, as always, in awe of her story-telling, inspired by her words, and simply blown away by the over-all emotional impact of her work! She is going to be famous one day very soon – and I can’t wait to tell the world “I knew her way back when…”

You don’t want to miss this book!! If you are a romantic at heart, if you love strong, witty characters that feel like old friends, if you just enjoy a great story with unexpected twists and turns, and if you love a good book-cry – this book is a must read!!

Simply amazing.
